I am an Associate Professor of Public Policy at International Christian University (ICU) (from April 2024), in the Department of Political Science and International Studies, in Tokyo, Japan. I specialize in East Asia, Public Policy/Comparative Politics, and International Relations. I received my BA in economics from the University of California, Berkeley (2004), studied Korean at Seoul National University, and finished off with my PhD in Political Science from the University of Michigan (2013).

My research interests range widely and cut across many fields within the social sciences but are centered most prominently (or broadly) on the causes of democratization and the consequences thereof on state actor behavior including but not limited to policy choices (i.e. public policy), implementation, and outcomes. While the majority of my publications have utilized East Asian cases (Korea in particular) as a source of empirical evidence, theory generation, and testing, I am more of a generalist at heart than an area studies specialist. That being said, I very much enjoy researching and teaching both country-specific and general theoretical content.
